Legislative Activity & PTA

by Anna Win

PTA is one of the nation's oldest advocacy organizations. PTA has been an advocate for children since 1897 and has always been at the forefront in supporting laws that benefit children. One PTA purpose is to secure adequate laws for the care and protection of children and youth. So, what is the definition of Advocacy within the guidelines of of PTA?

Advocacy in PTA is simply communicating about an issue for which National or State PTA has adopted a position by speaking, writing, phoning, or emailing. The purpose of the communication can be to inform, educate, persuade or increase the level of awareness about the issue. PTA members are advocates for children and their parents. PTA members have and still advocate on a wide variety of child-related issues: education, health, nutrition, safety, juvenile protection, welfare reform, parent and family life, and drug abuse prevention, to name a few.

Every PTA member can be an effective advocate. The process is always the same: identify, research and understand the issue; identify the decision-maker; and develop and communicate the message. The process is not always easy, and dedication and perseverance are usually required. Ed100 website, https://ed100.org offers short, very easy to read lessons to learn more about the California education system.

You don’t have to be a member of Ed100 to review these lessons. However, I encourage everyone to create an account and register your school.  Whenever you complete a lesson on Ed100, you earn a ticket for your school on the Ed100 Leaderboard (https://ed100.org/leaderboard). Periodically, Ed100 holds drawings using those tickets as entries to win. The next drawing is on November 15, 2017.   See rules for details. No purchase is offered or required.

For pennies a day, you can become a PTSA member, joining more than 4 million other people who share your interest in issues affecting children. Everyone—parents, educators, students and other citizens active in their schools and communities—is invited to join our not-for-profit parent association. The PTA’s nationwide network provides parents with the forum and tools to collectively influence the decisions that affect children not only at their schools, but also throughout their districts, within their states, and across the nation. This mission is unique to the PTSA. We at DVMS have fun while making our school environment a richer place for our students, parents and staff.

It's NEVER too late to join!
