Do you remember what it was like to enter middle school, or any new school? Sometimes it's a great experience, and sometimes it's not the best. WEB Leaders are 8th graders who are positive role models for 6th grade students (as well as the entire DVMS student body) and leaders of the school.

ATTENTION: At Diablo Vista Middle School WEB is not an elective or an extra class you have to take. Therefore, you are still able to take the electives you want, in addition to being part of this extraordinary program!

Applications are due February 14.

Youth 2 Youth 2018

Registration Link: https://tinyurl.com/Y2Y2018
What:  24th Annual Youth to Youth Middle School Conference
 When:  March 24, 2018
Where:  Castro Valley High School, 19400 Santa Maria Ave., Castro Valley
 Time:  7:45 P– 10:00 P.M.
 Cost:  $45 before February 24; $55 after February 24

The Youth to Youth model creates opportunities for teens to support each other in decisions to be drug-free.  One of the strongest predictors of adolescent drug use is association with drug-using peers.  The youth staff simply says that Youth to Youth is about kids helping other kids stay drug-free.  The conference is an entire day where youth get together, have fun and talk about some really important issues.

More than 100 high school students will work at the conference, guiding their middle school peers through skits, games, panel discussions and small-group activities.  More than 20 workshops will be offered throughout the day.  Some of the topics to be covered include building self-esteem, stress reduction, drug and alcohol abuse, positive body image, dating and relationship troubles, self-defense, jazz dancing, art, and communication skills.  True stories of teens and substance abuse will be a key element of the conference.  There will also be small group discussions, a motivational speaker and a dance at the end of the conference.

The learning and fun continues from morning till night during a Y2Y conference.   The day is very interactive, high energy and youth are kept moving from activity to activity.
If your students’ like hanging out with their friends, meeting new friends, having fun, dancing, and good food – then this is the conference for them.   More than just an “event”, the Youth to Youth Middle School Conference is a way to see the best in teens and their leadership skills.

Youth to Youth’s principles are simple:
Youth 2 Youth program is youth driven, every teen is given the opportunity to take on leadership roles and each young person is guided in developing assets within themselves.

Do not miss out on this potentially life-changing, saving, and enhancing experience!

*Attending the conference will count for three hours of Soaring Eagle community service

Dear DV families,

I would like to give a heartfelt thank you on behalf of Walter Helms Middle School and Diablo Vista Leadership.  With your help, we were able to support approximately 100 people in having a happy holiday.  Helms is out sister school and we do what we can to support our extended family.

We asked them what else they need, and their request was simple.  They are in need of warm jackets and clothing.  We would like to support them in having a warm coat drive, so as you are cleaning out your closets, if you find that you have gently used coats to spare, we would be happy to deliver them to Helms.

Please send gently used or new warm clothes and jackets to room 1.67. We will deliver January 17.

Contact Mrs. Pappachan if you have questions.

Good Afternoon DV Families!

Adopt-a-Family tag pick up is this Wednesday during e-period!

We are supporting our sister school, Walter Helms Middle School, AKA Helms, in San Pablo.  Helms has many homeless families, and we have the opportunity to help 22 of those families!

How is works:

- During e-period, tomorrow, each grade will come to the MPR and pick out gift tags, sign out gift tags and then return with their teacher to class.  It is important that when the gifts are returned, they are returned with the gift tag.

- There will be four sections: Young Children (0-9), Older Children (10-18), and 2 sections for Adults, so think ahead, but be flexible.

- Students must check out their tags before leaving!  If students do not want to get a tag, they do not have to.  Extra tags will be available through Mrs. Pappachan.

- Staff is encouraged to participate as well!

- Gifts should be returned wrapped and with the DVMS gift tag.  We will take care of check in and changing the tag to a nicer one.

- Gift cards to Target, Safeway, Walmart encouraged.

- Shopping at Richmond accessible places is encouraged, in case exchanges need to take place, gift receipts are encouraged as well.

All gifts are due by 12/8.

We will be starting Student Council in October, and we would love to have you join us as a Advisory Ambassador!

What is a Advisory Ambassador?  An Advisory Ambassador is the representative for their Advisory and for their grade level.  They bring their concerns, ideas and enthusiasm for making Diablo Vista the best it can be to each monthly meeting.  They can also seek out officers during the rest of the time if they have ideas (or ideas have been brought to them).  Ambassadors will then report out and seek involvement from their advisory class.

When does student council meet?  Student Council meets the first Tuesday of every month at 7:45am until 8:05 am.  Attendance will be taken.  The meetings will be held in 1.67.

How do you sign up?  Let your Advisory teacher know that you are interested!  They will tell you how to proceed from there!

If you have further questions, come see Mrs. Pappachan in 1.67.

We are looking for new designs for our mascot, Eduardo, and we hope that you will send in your ideas!  The design can be drawn by hand or electronically created.  Please turn designs in to apappachan@srvusd.net, or turn them in to Mrs. Pappachan directly.  Entries are due by 3/31.  Sometime after spring break, we will hold a vote for which design be represents being a Soaring Eagle.

We are using Kincaid Karacters for our company, in case you want to check out what kind of mascots they make.

We are looking for front and rear views, side views are optional.  The design should show the spirit of Diablo Vista with being Soaring Eagles.  Things to consider, wings are great, but consider having usable hands as part of the design.  The finished product will be created to the height of an average DV student!

Thank you for being a part of developing a piece of our school spirit!

DVMS students have been participating in technology lessons on how to stay safe on social media and technology. DVMS is in the final stages of obtaining Digital Citizenship certification through  Common Sense Media (https://www.commonsensemedia.org/).

As part of the process of obtaining certification, we created a Common Sense Media Task Force to create and write the DVMS Digital Citizenship Vision:

At Diablo Vista Middle School, we empower learning with 21st Century skills, provide the tools necessary to teach digital citizenship skills necessary

for success at home, at school, and in the future. Included in this are ethical use, responsible decision making, respectful interaction, and respecting the power of the tools we use in a modern connected world.

Learn more about the lessons and videos students participated in and watched, on topics including, cyber-bullying, digital footprints, social media, thinking before clicking and much more.

We also encourage you to check out Common Sense Media's website and download their smartphone app. This independent, non-profit organization specializing in helping families make smart media choices. Whether you or your child are considering watching a movie, playing a video game or downloading an app, they have independent, age-based reviews and ratings. They have great resources for kids, parents and educators on being a good digital citizen and helping families understand and navigate the problems, tools and opportunities of

 our digital world.

Our own SRVUSD website, www.digitalsrvusd.net is another great resource to "educate students, staff, and the community on effective ethical, and safe use of online and digital." Check out the resources, tools and periodic This website provides information on cyber-bullying, online privacy, intellectual property and digital footprint. Consider bookmarking the site and subscribing to receive periodic updates on current relevant digital issues that affect your students!

Youth to Youth!

San Ramon Valley Community Against Substance Abuse and Castro Valley Community Action Network are very excited to announce the opening of registration for the 23rd Annual Youth to Youth Middle School Conference taking place on March 4, 2017. The Youth to Youth High School leaders from San Ramon Valley and Castro Valley can’t wait to inspire your 6th, 7th, & 8th grade students and help them discover the power of their voice. This is an amazing day and an opportunity for young teens to spend with high school leaders who believe in the strength of being drug, alcohol and tobacco free. But this conference is about so much more than drug and alcohol prevention. It’s about leadership, self-confidence and empowering young people to make positive choices that impact their future.

Registration Link: http://conta.cc/2hdFSuv

What: 23rd Annual Youth to Youth Middle School Conference
When: March 4, 2017
Where: Castro Valley High School, 19400 Santa Maria Ave., Castro Valley Time: 8:00 A.M. – 10:00 P.M.
Cost: $45 before February 18; $55 after February 18

Youth to Youth’s principles are simple:

  • The program is youth driven,

  • Every teen is given the opportunity to take on leadership roles and

  • Each young person is guided in developing assets within themselves.

  • The Youth to Youth model creates opportunities for teens to support each other in decisions

to be drug free. One of the strongest predictors of adolescent drug use is association with drug using peers. The youth staff simply says that Youth to Youth is about kids helping other kids stay drug free. The conference is an entire day where youth get together, have fun and talk about some really important issues.

  • More than 100 high school students will work at the conference, guiding their middle school peers through skits, games, panel discussions and small-group activities.
